CLE seeks ‘export excellence’ status for three towns

27/01/2011

India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has made a plea to the government to recognise three more clusters as towns of export excellence (TEE), due to their significant contribution to the country’s leather exports.

The council has asked for TEE recognition for Ranipet (Tamil Nadu), Gurgaon and Unnao (Uttar Pradesh). These towns exported $265 million, $216 million and $176 million worth of leather products respectively for the year 2009-10, according to the chairman of the CLE, M Rafeeque Ahmed.

The threshold limit for according TEE status to a leather cluster is $165 million, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Recognition of these clusters as TEE will help the locations receive infrastructure boosts as well as other support measures to enhance their exports further.

Recognised associations are provided assistance under the market access scheme.
