Buyers and sellers from Tanzania and Mauritius on met on 24 January 2011 to set strategies for tapping various business opportunities and create the chance for future growth between the two countries.

The Prime Minister of Tanzania, Mizengo Pinda, told delegates in Dar es Salaam that the meeting would provide an opportunity for the two countries to increase trade volumes and contribute more to the economic growth.

“Goods worth $1.4 million were exported to Mauritius and imports value of $3.6 million for the year 2009,” Mr Pinda said in a speech read on his behalf by the Minister of Trade and Marketing, Dr Cyril Chami.

Tanzania is the second biggest producer of leather in Africa, however only 10% of raw leather is processed as 90% is exported. Mr Pinda also stated that 80%of Tanzania’s cotton is exported in raw form, with only 20% processed.

“These are some of the few investment opportunities which Mauritius investors may come to invest in the country,” he said.

Mr Pinda said the government would continue to offer conducive investment for both domestic and foreign investors. He said that Tanzania would borrow a leaf and learn from Mauritius’ achievements recorded in recent days; Mauritius was ranked first by the World Bank in offering easy and conducive business environments in Africa, and has a more successful private sector.
