Drought forces herders to head for the capital

24/01/2011
Worsening drought in Somalia has forced herders to move with their livestock into the capital, Mogadishu, because of a lack of pasture land and water, the United Nations has reported.

The exact number of people displaced by the drought is not yet available but recent UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reports put the number at 12,000 at least. Some families have started selling their assets to get money for transport to refugee camps in neighbouring Kenya and Ethiopia.
