Teacher shortage in Bangladesh leather college
The Bangladesh College of Leather Technology (BCLT), the only educational institution in the country that is teaching leather, footwear and leather production technology is suffering from teacher shortage, the Financial Express has reported.
College authorities have decided not to enrol new students for the academic year 2010-11 because of its severe teacher crisis, college sources told the newspaper.
“There are only seven teachers for more than 1,000 students. That’s why we have stopped new admission,” said Sabur Murshed, an assistant teacher at the department of Leather Engineering of the college.
Students have alleged that the relevant authorities remained unmoved despite several demonstrations by them to resolve the problem.
They have urged Education Minister, Nurul Islam Nahid, to remove the bottleneck so they can complete the courses properly without further delay.
Riyadh Muhammad Muhiuddin, a third-year student of the Leather Engineering department, expressed his misery, saying that his dreams are becoming elusive day by day.
Administrative conflict is one of the main reasons for halting recruitment process for several years, he claimed.
Admitting the matter, Idris Ali, principal of the college, told the FE that “Academic activities are severely hampered as three departments are run by only seven regular teachers”.
“According to the Dhaka University academic curriculum, at least 80 teachers are required to carry out the regular academic activities of the college smoothly,” the principal said.
