PTA requests government to ban livestock export

20/01/2011

Due to the fact that more than 200,000 animals were perished in the recent floods in Punjab and Sindh, the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has asked the government to impose a ban on the export of livestock as the leather sector is now facing an acute shortage of skin and hides.

Khurshid Alam, the chairman of PTA requested that the government sanction a complete ban on the wet-blue leather exports or to increase tax from 20% to 50%.

In the last few years, the deteriorating supply of wet-blue stocks inhibited progression in leather gloves manufacturing industry.

In the international market there has been a large demand of wet blue leather and thus a huge amount has been exported. Alam believes, it has become impossible for PTA’s members to execute their export orders in time and is concerned that its foreign exchange relationships will be strained due to cancellation of export orders.
