Meat consumption in Argentina lowest in almost a decade

Official figures from Argentina show that beef consumption in the country fell by almost 17% in the first 11 months of last year, compared to the same period in 2009. Cattle slaughter was down by 26% and exports of beef were 59% lower than the year before after the government imposed a ban, seeking to keep supplies up and prices down at home.

However, consumption of beef for the who year was 16.9% lower, with average totals of 57.2 kilos of beef person for the 11 months. This is Argentina’s lowest per capita beef consumption figure for the first 11 months of any year for a decade, lower even than 2002, the lowest so far this century.

Comparisons with 2009 make the figures look especially poor because beef consumption in 2009 was high, working out at 68.7 kilos consumed by the average Argentinean citizen over the 12 months of that year.

Beef industry observers say they hope slaughter numbers will start to pick up again from the start of 2013.
