Kanpur tanners unhappy at finger-pointing

The Small Tanners Association (STA) in the Indian city of Kanpur, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, has asked the state government to investigate fully allegations that their tanneries are discharging waste into the Ganga river. The tanners feel the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has placed an unfair amount of blame on their industry.

STA president,
Hafeezur Rahman, told The Times of India that almost 20,000 big and small industrial units in operation in the area have discharged waste into the river.

One of his association’s members, Amit Tewari, said that tanners were considering moving their production units away from Kanpur and, in some cases, closing them down altogether.

The association says that of just over 400 tanneries in the area, only 237 are in operation at the moment. The STA called on the state government to offer more support to the industry.
