Argentina: tannery calls temporary halt to production

13/01/2011
For the time being, at least, a prominent tannery in Luján, Argentina, has ceased production.

The Curtarsa tannery will offer its workforce at least 60% of their salaries for the duration of the closure, which the company said was a necessary step to prevent it from going out of business. It consulted with Argentina’s labour ministry before taking this action, it said.

A statement said workers would receive 60% of their January salaries and 70% of their normal level of pay in February. The tannery took similar action in 2008.
