Mali: hides emerge as important export

10/01/2011
Mali’s ministry for livestock and farming has announced exports in the first quarter of 2010 of more than 2.6 million hides and skins. The main buyers were in China, Spain and Italy and the raw material earned the African country almost $4 million.

The ministry said that in the whole of 2009, Mali exported 273,170 bovine hides and 747,600 sheepskins.

Livestock farming is now Mali’s third-richest export industry after gold and wood.
