Restored Ferrari owned by John Lennon up for auction
10/01/2011
Restoration carried out in the mid-1990s included renewing the leather upholstery to the manufacturer’s original specifications. The sale will take place at the Grand Palais in Paris on February 5. The car has attracted a pre-sale estimate of between EUR 120,000 and EUR 170,000.
In the build-up to the sale, Bonham’s explained that when newspapers reported in February 1965 that John Lennon had passed his driving test, agents representing a number of luxury car brands turned up at the gates of the Beatle’s home in Weybridge near London with their latest vehicle models. From those on display, John Lennon picked the light blue Ferrari, then priced at £2,000, although he parted company with it quite soon afterwards.
The current owner bought the car at the end of the 1980s and carried out the restoration project, which included fitting full-grain leather upholstery in slate blue on the front and rear seats, and around the gear-stick.
