The Brazilian leather sector expects this year to post turnover of $3.8 billion as compared to a projection of $3.4 billion for 2010, according to the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry, CICB.

Cited by the Brazilian press, the same figures showed that the number of heads of cattle slaughtered is expected to exceed 44 million during 2011, keeping Brazil as the world's second largest raw leather producing nation after China and ahead of India and the US.

According to the chairman of the CICB, Wolfgang Goerlich, leather exports in 2010 are expected to have totalled around $1.7 billion, which is 10% less than in 2008 and 46% more than in 2009.

Mr Goerlich also noted that with the overall turnover for all types of leather at $55 billion per year, Brazil accounts for approximately 6.5% of the world market by revenue, behind China, Italy and India.

“With these figures we have one of the most notable positions in the world list. In production of raw cow leather we occupy, after China, the second place by turnover.”

The state of Rio Grande do Sul continues to be the biggest leather tanning area in Brazil, followed by São Paulo, considered to be the biggest exporter, Paraná, Ceará, Bahia, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Minas Gerais and Pará.
