Brazilian Q3 hide stats make interesting reading

Brazilian abattoirs slaughtered 7.4 million head of cattle in the third quarter of 2010, the country’s national statistics organisation, IBGE, has said. This figure represents a drop of 2.5% compared to the second quarter.

IBGE said the overall decline was largely because of a drop of almost 11% in the number of cows slaughtered in Brazil over the three-month period; the slaughter of bulls increased by 1.9% over the quarter.

Compared to the third quarter of 2009, the figures represent an increase of 2.6% and the running total for the first three quarters of 2010 is up by 7.1% on the same period the year before.

The number of hides sold during the third quarter of 2010 was 6.4 million, a drop of 6.1% compared to the third quarter of 2009. IBGE said that tanneries for which it had information had collectively processed 8.9 million hides over the third quarter of 2010, a decline compared to the second quarter of 2010 and also compared to the third quarter the previous year.
