In advance of the India International Leather Fair in Chennai, January 31-February 3, India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) issued figures showing the Indian leather sector is a $7 billion industry that provides employment for almost 2.5 million workers, of whom around 30% are women.

The organisation said around 15% of international brands’ global sourcing in leather garments, leathergoods and leather footwear takes place in India and from $2.2 billion in financial year 2003–2004, the sector increased its export revenues to $3.4 billion in 2009–2010.
