Tannery town becomes model for water use

A biologist from Bogotá, Mónica Sanz, has said at a United Nations conference on water in Zaragoza, Spain, that the efforts of 150 small tanneries have helped turn the Colombian town of Villa Pinzón into a model of waste water management.

With funding from the United Nations and from the European Union, she and her colleagues have worked with the tanneries to help them stay in business while reducing their water consumption by 70% and their effluent discharge by 80%, and turning solid waste into energy sources.

Her co-presenter, director of Acurtir, a local tanners’ association, Evidalia Fernández, said: “Thanks to this project, we have equipped ourselves to manage the situation. We know we are responsible for preventing misuse of our water resources, to reuse and manage our solid waste and convert it into benefits for the earth.”
