Aimed principally at buyers of leather and leathergoods, the statement said the European tanning Industry has embarked on a process of continuing progress in social accountability and environmental performance. In 2000, various players in the European leather industry signed a code of conduct on social responsibility and in 2008 agreed a framework agreement on social and environmental reporting. “European tanners want to be perceived as front-runners in social and environmental excellence,” COTANCE said in the new statement.
The organisation has published on its website social and environmental reports from 12 European countries: Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. The reports are available at this link national reports.
“This is a first and it is meant to be a baseline for regularly evidencing progress towards increased performance,” COTANCE said. “When reading these national reports you will learn more from their leather producers and we hope that you will find good reasons for continuously supporting European tanners in the field of your competence, not only to produce the best leathers worldwide, but also the leather with the highest standards in social accountability and environmental performance.”
