Indian Council for Leather Exports pushes for new growth in US

India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has reported that the global economic slowdown that started in 2008 brought a halt to the growth in exports of leather garments, leathergoods and accessories to the US that India had been enjoying for around five years.

In financial year 2004–2005, the value of exports of these products was just less than $160 million. By financial year 2008–2009 this total had increased to more than $177 million.

However during 2009-10, the total declined to $154.9 million. The CLE announced the figure after a recent trip to the US to promote leather sector exports.
