Leather industry results ahead of schedule in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s leather exports rose strongly in the first five months of the current financial year (July-November). All segments of the leather sector performed well.

According to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Bangladesh's total leather sector exports grew in value by 44.7% to $249.6 million over the five-month period, from $172.5 million in the same period last financial year.

The breakdown shows that Bangladesh exported finished leather worth $109.8 million compared to $84.5 million in July-November 2009, showing  growth of 29.9%. The value of leather footwear exports increased by 47.9% to $118.8 million, from $80.3 million. Leathergoods exports increased in value by 173.2% to $20.9 million from $7.6 million in same months in 2009.

Bangladesh has fixed an export target of $563.8 million for the leather sector for the 2010–11 financial year. These results mean the industry is 44% of the way towards meeting this target and is ahead of schedule.
