Tanners in Pakistan to take part in protest march
06/12/2010
At the end of November, Pakistan’s federal government announced plans to overhaul the country’s tax regime through the RGST. At the same time, the government said it wanted to raise around $800 million from businesses across Pakistan to help it rebuild the parts of the country that were devastated by flooding that began with the monsoon rains at the end of July 2010.
Khurshid Alam, chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) issued a statement saying that the leather industry should continue to enjoy a zero rating status with regard to tax because it contributed an estimated 5% to Pakistan’s gross domestic product. In protest at the government’s insistence on changing this, he said leather industry figures would take part in a peaceful protest march in Lahore.
He said he hoped this gesture would convey “the deep resentment of the business community to the proposed impositions, which are undoubtedly harmful to the leather industry”.
