Stuart Weitzman creates luxury salmon leather handbags

02/12/2010

High-end footwear brand Stuart Weitzman is continuing to lend its name to luxury handbags and has launched a new collection made using nanai salmon skin leather from German leather producer, Salmo Leather GmbH.

The handbag models have been created for the label’s spring-summer 2011 collection and range from shoulder bags and mini bags to totes and clutches. Stuart Weitzman used printed leather as well as nanai salmon skin leather to make the luxury bags.

Salmo Leather GmbH makes nanai leather from the skin of organically raised salmon. Based in Bischofsmais in Bavaria, the company uses only vegetable tanning methods, which it says preserve the structure and pigmentation of the original fishskin. It also points out that the fish themselves come only from ethical farming programmes.

The result, according to Nanai, is leather that is soft, strong and hypoallergenic. In addition, tests have shown it to have high levels of light and colour fastness and to perform well in terms of abrasion resistance.
