New funding for leather and footwear museum

The regional government in the Balearic Islands has announced it will provide funding for a new leather and footwear museum in the town of Inca on the island of Mallorca.

Over the next two years, the regional government and the local council will give the museum a total of EUR 350,000 to help get the project started and then raise its profile among visitors to Mallorca. The regional government’s contribution will be EUR 200,000, with the money coming from the budget that supports the tourist industry.

Inca’s mayor, Rafael Torres, issued a statement saying the objective was to celebrate the town’s history as a centre of excellence in leather and footwear production and to broaden the town’s tourist appeal.

Famous footwear brands from Mallorca include Fluxá, Camper, Farrutx and Tony Mora.

The museum will build on an existing display in the town’s museum of some machinery and a few display panels cataloguing the industry’s history there. Mr Torres told local media that the new money would go towards restoring other machines that companies have donated, creating four jobs to run the museum and, possibly, setting up conferences and events examining the current state of the leather and footwear industry. The location will be a former army barracks.
