Major tanner confirms job losses

29/11/2010
Brazilian tanning group Vitapelli has confirmed to local media that it is laying off a total of 650 workers and scaling back production from the current level of more than 3 million hides a year.

Founded in 2000, Vitapelli runs two tanneries in the city of Presidente Prudente, in the west of the state of São Paulo. One of the facilities produces wet blue and crust, the other finished leather. The company’s focus has long been on export markets and it has said constraints imposed by the currency exchange market constitute one of the main reasons for the job losses.

The company will continue to employ around 1,500 people.
