The glamour of long gloves

Sales of long leather gloves for women are on the increase. Some observers believe television shows such as early 1960s-based Mad Men have helped revive the gloves as a glamorous accessory.

Online retailer my-wardrobe.com told The Financial Times at the end of November that it was seeing “unprecedented demand” for leather gloves, with elbow-length models among the most popular.

The newspaper argued that this season’s collections from high-profile fashion designers already incorporated a new-found love of gloves. Examples included Lanvin, which has leather dresses “mirrored by long leather gloves”.

The report said glove sales at retail chain John Lewis were 78% higher than at this time last year. The company’s head of accessories, Amanda Scott, told the newspaper that elbow-length gloves allow women to add an extra level of intrigue to an outfit. “Peeling off leather gloves on arrival somewhere has now become a ritual, that communicates polish and elegance,” she said.

The Financial Times also spoke to Deborah Moore, creative director of UK-based glove brand Dents about this phenomenon. She said: “There is something very elegant and sexy about long leather gloves and they work really well with this season’s trend for wearing capes. We have been taking orders from all over the world.”

Ms Moore pointed out that it was important for women to choose the right size of glove, and pointed out that few people these days know their glove size. She said shoppers should measure the hand they write with around the palm (excluding the thumb). Dents measures its sizes in inches.
