Bangladeshi tanners resume buying raw hides
The stand-off between raw hide wholesalers and tanners, as previously reported by leatherbiz.com, is to come to an end following a meeting between the Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Manufacturing Exporters’ Association (BFLLFEA) and the Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA).
Tanners will start buying raw hide from 29 November onwards, nearly two weeks after the Eid-ul-Azha festival, when rising prices prompted the tanners’ decision to stop buying hides and skins.
Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants Association (BHSMA) president Aftab Khan said the hitch erupted due to the high price of raw hides, "but traders are familiar with such problems”.
Previous reports had suggested that seasonal traders and wholesalers had bought bovine hides at rates that were 40% to 45% higher than the price fixed by the authorities. As a result, tanners were refusing to buy hides at higher rates than the fixed ones.
Mr Khan assumed that no trader except for the seasonal ones will be affected this year.
