Brazilian cattle population increased in 2009

The cattle population of Brazil increased to 205.3 million head in 2009 according to official figures just released.

This represents growth of 1.5%, or just over 3 million head, compared to the year before.

Mato Grosso was the state with the biggest livestock population, 13.3% of the national total, followed by Minas Gerais and Matro Grosso do Sul each with 10.9%.

Brazil has the second-highest cattle population in the world, just behind India's, according to figures from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation.
