New aqueous topcoat for patent leathers

Leather chemicals provider Clariant has developed an aqueous alternative to solvent-based patent topcoats, which it says will make a major contribution to efforts to make patent leathers with less solvent.

Patent leather is always in demand among footwear designers and manufacturers. The specialty chemicals provider says it has put a great deal of effort into expanding the range of products it can offer to help tanners meet this demand.

The new topcoat product, Melio 09-T-42, is an aqueous aliphatic PU-dispersion that Clariant believes will work well as an aqueous topcoat for patent leather, offering a higher gloss and elegant touch while maintaining the softness of the leather. Suitable for spray and roller coater applications, it offers high levels of flow and levelling properties and fast drying times.

It points out that Melio 09-T-42 is free from N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and can help tanners reduce their carbon emissions.
