Australia: live cattle exports down in value, up in volume

24/11/2010
Official figures show that Australia exported 637,938 head of live cattle in the first nine months of 2010. This figure represents a drop of 6% compared to the same period in 2009, although it is 7% above the average for the last five years.

A large proportion of the animals, around 66%, was shipped to Indonesia.

Local agricultural sources have said that the north of Australia in particular has experienced one of the wettest dry seasons in decades this year resulting in fewer live cattle being made available for export. This, combined with strong demand in export markets (Egypt, China, Israel and Libya are the most popular destinations after Indonesia), has resulted in higher prices.

For this reason, although volumes are down, the value of Australian live cattle exports is, at US $470.4 million for the first nine months of the year, 3% higher than in the same period last year.
