Russia may look to Uruguay to build up its beef cattle herd

Reports from South America suggest Russia may seek to import live cattle from Uruguay in an attempt to build up its own beef cattle herd.

The executive director of Aupcin, a local meat industry association, Álvaro Ferrés, said a group of Russian meat industry leaders had travelled to Uruguay to visit various installations, including feedlots. He later told local media: “We understand that Russia is exploring the possibility of building up its beef cattle herd to develop livestock there again, so they are thinking about taking cattle on feed to finish off in Russia. Another possibility is to ship in calf cows to Russia.”

He said Uruguayan cattle would be well suited to this exercise because of its quality and good health record. He said the Russians were impressed by the fact that Uruguay is free from foot and mouth and has an effective tracking system for cattle.
