Turkey: disappointing Eid slaughter numbers

22/11/2010
Reports from Turkey suggest that the level of slaughter of cattle, sheep and goats in the country during the Eid-al-Adha festival (November 16–19) was lower than expected this year.

The reasons for lower numbers include the presence of foot and mouth disease in Turkey, the high price of live animals, the scarcity of domestic sheep and cattle, and a preference among consumers not to buy live imported animals.

Nevertheless, leather industry sources say that the price of hides and skins in Turkey will fall by between 20% and 40% over the next two months thanks to the extra supply from the festival.
