Strong growth for Pakistan meat exports

Meat exports from Pakistan have risen in quantity and value during the last financial year, a report from the country’s central bank has said.

Pakistan exported 36,963 tonnes of meat with a value of $100 million in the financial year that ran from July 2009 until June 2010 compared to 26,121 tonnes and revenue of $70.5 million in the previous fiscal year. This represents growth of 41.5% in quantity and 41.7% in value.

According to the state bank, exports of fresh goat meat made a major contribution to this increase with demand from Saudi Arabia particularly strong. Exports of goat meat to Saudi Arabia doubled over the period under scrutiny.

The bank said high demand from Saudi Arabia is probably due to the ban imposed by the Saudi government on meat imports from Ethiopia. Apart from goat meat, exports of sheep meat also increased.
