Bangladesh: bank loans to buy hides and skins

16/11/2010
The government of Bangladesh has continued its tradition of making bank loans available to the country’s tanners to enable them to stock up on raw material, which becomes available in abundance around the time of the Eid-ul-Azha.

This year, the country’s state-owned banks will make more than $40 million available for tanneries to buy hides and skin, an increase of 30% on last year’s loan. Media in Bangladesh have said that private banks and other sources have provided further funding of around $12 million for the same purpose.

One bank official told local media that tanners collect around 80% of their raw material supply for a year at the time of Eid-ul-Azha.
