Leather museum appeals for artifacts

The Leatherworkers Museum in Peabody, Massachusetts, has issued an appeal for artifacts that will help celebrate and commemorate the town’s leather industry.

The museum opened in July 2009 with the aim of telling the story of the 300-year history of the tanning industry that at one time made Peabody the leather capital of the US. More than 80 tanneries operated in the city at its peak but this has now been reduced to one, Travel Leather.

Several items and photographs have already been donated to the museum. However, it is hoped that more artifacts could be found and donated that would help to make the museum of even greater interest, especially to young people who may have no idea about this unique history.

Anyone with photographs, documents or artifacts that they think might make appropriate donations is asked to contact the museum curator, Merritt Kirkpatrick, by email at MerrittKirkpatrick@gmail.com.
