Argentina close to China deal on beef

A senior government minister from Argentina has used social networking tool Twitter to inform the world that he and his team have succeeded in negotiations to open up the Chinese market to Argentinean beef, wine and dairy products.

Foreign affairs minister, Héctor Timerman, tweeted from Beijing, saying: “Our negotiations over opening up the Chinese market have concluded.” Reports from Argentina suggest an agreement to allow exports of beef to China will be ratified during an official visit to Beijing by agriculture minister, Julián Domínguez, on November 29. Shipments should begin before the end of 2010.

Official government estimates suggest that demand for Argentinean beef in China could be as high as 400,000 tonnes a year, which at current prices would bring in export revenues of $1.5 billion.
