Marfrig to reopen Uruguay abattoir

09/11/2010
Brazilian packer firm Marfrig has said it is preparing to reopen an abattoir in Uruguay in response to increasing numbers of cattle going for slaughter in the South American country and strong demand for quality beef in the international market.

Marfrig’s facility at Colonia has been closed owing to low slaughter numbers, but the company’s general manager in Uruguay, Martín Secco, has said the company has kept an eye on kill statistics and has seen an increasing number of cattle coming to market now. He said cattle availability would keep increasing week by week as summer begins in Uruguay.

In the first week in November, Uruguay’s cattle slaughter was 35,489 head, up from 32,917 the week before.
