Leather garment exporters hit by power problems

01/11/2010

A shortage of gas and electricity disrupted manufacturing operations in the Korangi industrial complex in Karachi, Pakistan, at the end of October, affecting tanners and leather garment producers.

The chairman of the Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (PLGMEA), Fawad Ijaz Khan, submitted a formal complaint to energy provider Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC). He pointed out that this is the peak season for leather garment exporters and any disturbance in production may delay export orders, with a possible impact on Christmas sales.

He asked the energy company to rectify the problem immediately. His focus was on the gas company because, even without electricity, manufacturers can use their own generators, but only if the gas pressure is sufficient.
