Brazil: leather exports slide in September
Brazilian leather exports fell 31.8% to $126 million in September compared with August exports. According to the Brazilian Tannery Association (CICB), the main reason for the decline is the deceleration of the dollar against the real.
However, during the first nine months of the year, the country’s leather exports totalled $1.3 billion, 65.1% higher than the same period in 2009.
"Unfortunately, our predictions of a slowdown have been realised. The September result shows a sharp decline in competitiveness caused by reasons unrelated to the efforts of the industry," explained CICB president, Wolfgang Goerlich.
Other reasons for the September decline, he said, include higher interest and tax rates, a lack of liquidity, bureaucracy and logistical problems.
