Japan: beef consumption up 3%
Japan consumed 66,162 tonnes of beef in August, 3% more than in August 2009, according to figures from the Livestock Industries Corporation and Agriculture of Japan (ALIC).
Imported beef consumption fell slightly in August to 36,559 tonnes compared with 36,485 tonnes in August 2009. However, domestic beef consumption rose 7% compared with the prior-year period, totalling 29,603 tonnes.
For the January to August period, beef consumption in Japan was 541,702 tonnes, 1% less than during the same period last year.
