Leather maker launches green initiatives

New York-based manufacturer of performance leathers and textiles Perrone Aerospace has introduced a new ‘Lifecycle Sustainability’ initiative. The aim is to produce leathers that are eco-friendly and to make its production processes more sustainable.

Its first project is to launch Leather XT, a new lightweight, fuel-saving leather seating material. According to the company it weighs 40% less than standard alternatives. It comprises a top-grain leather that is permanently bonded to a lightweight, military-grade fabric for extra strength, durability and fire-retardant qualities.
Perrone is also planning to reduce waste; reusing and recycling materials wherever possible. It will use some leather pieces to make leathergoods such as slippers and iPhone accessories. Smaller pieces will be sold to small leathergoods manufacturers for use in items such as key chains and coasters.
As well as making more chrome-free leather, the company will look for ways to improve its production processes. It will use recycled materials to package its goods and recycle incoming cardboard. The firm will introduce energy-efficient lighting and eliminate fluorocarbons in the manufacturing process. It will eliminate volatile organic compounds from the emulsion process and recycle heat from the manufacturing process back into the facility. During the summer months, recycled heat will be used to speed up the hide-drying process, while in cooler weather it will provide heating for the factory.
