More workers for Indian leather sector
The Indian government recently carried out an employment survey to see how the economic downturn has affected the job situation in the country.
The study covers the April to June period and includes eight sectors: leather, textiles and clothing, metals, automobiles, gems and jewellery, transport, IT and business and handloom/power loom. Information was collected from 2,635 units across 11 states.
The employment situation improved during the period for the fourth consecutive period. Overall employment levels were 162,000 higher in June than in March.
The leather sector employed 21,000 more people in June than in March, while the textile and apparel sector employed 154,000 fewer staff in June.
