EU urges Bangladesh to improve power supply
European Union officials have urged Bangladeshi authorities to improve the country’s power supply situation in a bid to attract more investment from Europe.
Outgoing EU ambassador Stefan Frowein voiced this opinion during a meeting with Bangladesh’s foreign minister, Dipu Moni, on October 19.
Other participants at the meeting included Spanish ambassador Arturo Perez Martinez, Italian ambassador Itala Occhi, French ambassador Charley Causeret, Netherlands ambassador Alphons Hennekens, German embassy spokesperson Rolf Dieter Reinhard, Danish embassy spokesperson Jan Moller-Hansen, Swedish embassy spokesperson Ylva Sorman-Nath, deputy British high commissioner Nick Low and Netherlands embassy spokesperson Tirza Theunissen.
The EU representatives said that Bangladesh was an attractive country for European investors but that issues surrounding energy supply continued to be a problem. Mr Moni responded by saying that the power situation will improve within the next few months as a result of additional government support.
Many European investors are already in operation in Bangladesh, including a number of leathergoods, textiles and cement producers. However, there is a great deal of potential for additional investment, both in these industries and in others.
