Australia exports 24% more live cattle
Exports of live cattle recovered in Australia in August, with 81,477 head exported, a 24% increase compared with August 2009. Total exports for the year to August were 566,241 head, up 1% year-on-year.
Indonesia continues to be the largest market for Australian live cattle, accounting for 66% of its total exports. However, the monthly volume purchased by Indonesia in August fell 33% compared with the previous year because of recently introduced restrictions on weight and the number of animals allowed to enter Indonesia. The country imported 40,948 head of Australian cattle.
Other markets showed strong growth in August, helping to offset the impact of the Indonesian decline. China imported 8,801 head, while Egypt imported 5,350 head, Israel imported 8,663 head and Jordan imported 9,328 head.
