Fine imposed on Madina Tannery

15/10/2010

Madina Tannery, one of the oldest tanneries in Chittagong, Bangladesh, has been fined Taka 1.95 million ($27,800) by the country’s environmental department. The company is accused of polluting the Karnaphuli River and violating environment law.
The department alleges that tannery waste is being discharged through a series of canals in the area and flowing into the river.

It claims to have found just three milligrams of dissolved oxygen (DO) per litre of waste produced by the tannery, and that the effluent’s pH level was 4.7.

Munir Chowdhury, who was responsible for leading the environmental team, said: "The standard DO level in a litre of water is 0.5 to 0.8 milligrams and pH
level is six to nine milligrams."
