US leather sector stands firm

US manufacturing levels continued to grow in September following a strong June-August period; however, the overall pace of expansion slowed, according to the Institute for Supply Management's latest ‘Report on Business’.

Despite being the 14th consecutive month of growth, there are now concerns that the manufacturing sector may not be able to regain the momentum seen over the summer. The purchasing managers' index (PMI) was at 54.4 in September, down from 56.3 in August.

The ISM report found that 13 of the 18 manufacturing industries recorded posted growth in September. These included leather and apparel, machinery, furniture and related products and chemical products.
