Uruguay exports 29% more beef to Russia

01/10/2010

Uruguayan beef exports of beef to Russia have grown 29.1% during the last 12 months.

The National Meat Institute of Uruguay (INAC) says the country exported 85,547 tonnes of beef to Russia during the year ended September 18 compared with 66,236 tonnes during the prior-year period. This accounts for 31% of total Uruguayan beef exports.

The average price per tonne was $2,911 compared with $2,474 in 2009.

According to industry exports, demand from Russia is firm and prices are at decent levels. In fact, reports suggest Russian importers would be prepared to import more Uruguayan beef if it were available. Demand is expected to increase further in November when government quotas in Russia come to an end and because Brazilian beef is also in short supply following droughts in some regions.
