Unfair for Vuitton to point the finger at leather

30/09/2010
Louis Vuitton is reported to have increased the price of some of its classic handbags and leathergoods by as much as 9%.

According to Reuters, the luxury brand has blamed the price rises on an increase in the cost of the leather it uses, but the news agency said analysts had put forward an alternative theory.

The suggestion is that the prices of items such as Louis Vuitton handbags are lower in the brand's European home market than in important Asian territories, including Japan and China. This is one of the reasons why bags and leathergoods are popular shopping items for Asian tourists visiting Paris and other European cities.

The price rise comes two weeks after Louis Vuitton decided to close some of its most popular Parisian shops an hour early to conserve stock ahead of the Christmas rush, Reuters pointed out.
