Rolls-Royce announces expansion of its leathershop

28/09/2010
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has today announced that it will expand the specialist leathershop it runs at Goodwood in the UK. The expansion follows the continued success of its Phantom and Ghost models, both of which use large amounts of leather in their interiors.

As a result, the company is creating ten additional positions in its machinist team.

The machinist team was launched with just four people in 2002 and currently has 30 skilled associates working across two shifts. The team is the most international in the company, with nationalities represented including British, American, Portuguese, Ukrainian, German and Polish. Current team members come from a variety of industries, including saddlery, lingerie, upholstery, couture work and sail making. The team also hosts apprentices and interns during their time at the company.

Torsten Müller-Ötvös, chief executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said on making the announcement: “I am delighted to confirm that we have expanded our leathershop. Every one of our cars is hand-built to order and the interiors are handcrafted by experts. By increasing the size of our leathershop team we are reintroducing craft skills that, in many cases, would otherwise have lain dormant or been lost completely. If production continues at the current rate, and all indicators at this stage are positive, we will need to increase the team further in due course.”
