Japan: hot July brings beef consumption down
24/09/2010
Consumers there bought 69,816 tonnes of beef in July, according to figures just released by the country's Agriculture & Livestock Industries Corporation (ALIC).
Observers have said that the temperatures across Japan were exceptionally hot this July, leading many consumers to hold back on eating beef.
The cost of importing beef from Australia (source of more than 70% of beef imported into Japan)owing to the high value of the Australian dollar may also have been a contributing factor.
