Rainforest loss could be lowest on record

The Brazilian ministry for the environment has briefed media in the country that it expects to lose the smallest area of rainforest this year since it began keeping records in 1977. The information comes Brazil's space agency.

Reports suggest the total for the year will be between 5,000 and 6,000 square-kilometres. If confirmed, this would mean the country had already hit the target it has in place for 2015.

As part of a climate change programme that the ministry has put in place, the ministry is aiming to reduce legal deforestation to an area of 5,000 square-kilometres by 2017.

The amazon rainforest is estimated to cover a total area of around 5.5 million square kilometres.
