Turkey to import live sheep

17/09/2010
Turkey may be about to increase substantially the number of head of live sheep it imports.

The reason is that livestock farmers in the domestic market appear unable to supply enough sheep to meet current demand for the celebration of the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha. The festival, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, falls this year between November 16 and 20.

Observers in Turkey estimate that over the feast, butchers will slaughter between 3.5 million and 4 million animals (goat and cattle as well as sheep). They say that for the past 20 years, Turkey's sheep population has been in decline and that the government is now considering a move to increase imports of the animals to meet demand and prevent scarcity leading to spiralling prices.
