FMD confirmed in Turkey

The authorities in Turkey have confirmed the presence in the country of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

Turkey's ministry of agriculture has closed down 40 livestock markets around the country and is restricting the movement of live animals. It has also embarked on a programme of vaccinations.

Leather industry observers say they expect fewer domestic animals to go to slaughter and for imports of raw hides, and of meat, to increase. There are estimates of a loss of $80 million to the Turkish meat industry because of the outbreak.

Turkey currently imports around 50% of the raw hides its leather industry uses and it seems that this amount is likely to increase.
