CICB issues warning with strong Brazilian leather export figures
14/09/2010
On announcing the figures, the president of the Brazilian Tannery Association (CICB), Wolfgang Goerlich, said: “We must look at this realistically and say that it will be difficult for the Brazilian tanning sector to maintain this rate of exporting leather worth $150 million each month until the end of the year. There are several factors that are weakening the competitiveness of our industry.”
He said it was beginning to prove difficult for tanners to secure raw material as packer firms are reducing slaughter. At the same time, he said Brazilian leather exporters are struggling to secure prices in overseas markets that cover their costs. All this, he said, was in addition to the well-documented problems companies have in doing business in Brazil because of high levels of taxes and bureaucracy, a lack of credit and poor transport and logistics infrastructure.
Mr Goerlich added that the CICB will continue to do its best to promote Brazilian leather on the global market.
